Ram-and-rob gangs on the prowl

KUALA LUMPUR: If you are in the habit of driving home late at night, beware.

Criminals are using the old “ram-and-rob” ploy against motorists in the city lately.

These robbers would normally seek out motorists driving luxury cars along roads with minimal traffic, usually late at night, before deliberately knocking into the back of the victims’ cars.

When the victims got down to assess the damage, the thieves would have no problem hijacking the vehicles and speeding off due to the lack of traffic during that hours.

City police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohmad Salleh said police investigations revealed that there were more than one group scouring the city centre and its surrounding areas.

“There have been a number of such cases and investigations revealed there are several groups committing these crimes,” he said after witnessing the handing over of duties between outgoing Kuala Lumpur Public Order and Traffic Department chief Asst Comm Abdul Hamid Mohamad to Asst Comm Fuzi Zaman.

Abdul Hamid has been promoted as the Federal Reserve Unit commander with the rank of SAC.

DCP Mohmad added that investigations were ongoing to nab and cripple these groups.

He said there had been numerous cases  recorded in the city similar to that which happened on Wednesday night.

During the incident, Ong Ming Chiang, 26, was driving from Jalan Kuching to Selayang when her Honda Accord was hit from behind.

When she pulled over to check the damage, four men rushed out and held her before driving off with her car, not realising that Ong’s 14-month-old son was in the back seat.

She later received a call from a man who found her son strapped to his baby seat outside a restaurant, about 2km from the crime scene.
