Businessman pays RM99,555 for PKR 1 plate

BUTTERWORTH: A Penang businessman has won the bid for the “PKR 1” vehicle registration number plate with RM99,555.

State Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Datuk Hassan Yaacob said the man in his 40s was among five people who had bid for the number, the lowest of which was RM40,000.

“We received 623 bids for the PKR registration series, of which 384 applicants were successful. I am not too sure if there was any public figure or PKR leader among those who submitted bids,” he said in an interview here yesterday.

Last month, Penang Deputy Chief Minister I and state PKR chief Datuk Mansor Othman had said that several party leaders had expressed interest in submitting bids for the PKR series.
Mansor said he had submitted a bid for a “nice sounding” number for himself.

Bidding for the PKR vehicle registration number started on May 21 and ended at noon on June 4.

Hassan said besides PKR 1, the other vehicle plate with the highest number of bids was PKR 8, which fetched RM33,800.

Other high sellers were PKR 3 at RM50,000, PKR 5 at RM28,000 and PKR 2 at RM23,200.

Successful bidders also paid between RM12,000 and RM38,380 for PKR 6, PKR 7, PKR 9 and PKR 10.

“Unlike the WWW number plates which received 18,243 bids, there is nothing extraordinary about the PKR series,” said Hassan.

“It is quite normal for us to receive about 500 to 600 bids out of the 9,999 vehicle registration numbers given to each series.

“In fact, a few people have told me that they wanted to wait for the PKS series instead – for reasons best known to them,” said Hassan.

Hassan said a list of successful bidders for the PKR series would be displayed at the Penang JPJ headquarters in Seberang Jaya here today.
