Calibrate machines by July 16 for new banknotes

PETALING JAYA: All relevant parties should expedite their machine calibration exercise to accept the new series of Malaysian banknotes due to be released on July 16.

Bank Negara said they should do so for the convenience of the public.

“In the event where the machine calibrations are not completed by July 16 despite the advance notice of at least six months, alternative solutions should be provided for the general public.

“For example, setting up banknote exchange counters or manual ticketing counters to ensure public convenience,” said the central bank in a statement yesterday.

It said it had been engaging relevant stakeholders over the last few months to facilitate a smooth introduction of the new banknotes.

These stakeholders include financial institutions, shopping complexes, public transportation companies, telecommunication companies, parking operators, payment kiosk owners as well as ticketing and vending machines operators.

On April 13, it was reported that new banknotes for RM1, RM5, RM10, RM20 and RM100 would be released.

In February, The Star reported that auto-pay machines at some shopping complexes were rejecting newly-minted coins issued by Bank Negara, frustrating consumers who needed to pay for their parking tickets. This was because the operators did not recalibrate the machines on time.

For further information on the new banknotes, the public can contact BNMLINK at 1300-88-5465 or 03-2698 8044 at ext 7307 or 8658, or e-mail to ncs@bnm.gov.my.
