Highway toll discounts for Raya balik kampung

KUALA LUMPUR: Highway users will receive an attractive toll rebate for their Hari Raya balik kampung journey.

Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) director-general Datuk Ismail Md Salleh said the announcement would be made by the Works Minister soon.

"Every year we always talk to our partners to give a discount or rebate to users especially during and before Raya, and also for Merdeka day.

"We are giving (discount) for this year. How much? My minister will make the announcement, but I can assure you this year will be better than previous (year) because we are also celebrating the 55th anniversary of Merdeka Day, and that makes this year so special," he told reporters here after launching the Panadol 'Be Prepared' Campaign, here.

Launched by GlaxosmithKline Consumer Healthcare, the campaign aims to encourage the public to be prepared this Ramadan and Aidilfitri with Panadol for stress-free observance and celebration.

The Panadol 'Be Prepared' also collaborated with Touch 'n Go by giving away 50,000 Touch 'n Go card pre-loaded with RM10 each at selected toll plazas and through a participating retailer nationwide commencing Aug 1.

Ismail said the MHA was also reviewing safety measures for the coming festive season and hoped to finalise it by next week.

"Every festive season we have to do very detailed preparation. For this time, Hari Raya and Merdeka Days are so close and we expect huge traffic one or two days before Aug 18, after Raya, and towards the end of the month," he said.

The authority was working closely with the police, Road Transport Department (JPJ), and Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD, he said.

Ismail said the traffic congestion had always become an issue during festive season every year as there were about 1.4 million or 1.5 million vehicles on the road especially on the expressway.
