No leeway on permissible lorry loads
KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) will not compromise over overloading of lorries as it threatens the safety of other road users.
According to a statement by SPAD, the load limit of each cargo vehicle was fixed by the Road Transport Department, before it was licensed by SPAD.
"The commission carries out its duties as provided for under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010," said the commission.
Overloaded lorries not only posed a danger but also damaged roads, according to the statement issued in response to the action of more than 200 owners and drivers of tipper trucks who gathered at Jalan Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh, Melaka on Tuesday to protest against the enforcement operations of SPAD.
Melacca Lorry Association adviser Ko Bing Liyong had said the gathering was aimed at asking SPAD to reconsider the regulations on lorry loads, claiming SPAD's operations affected their income.
