Owner of vehicle in crash says he wasn't the driver

KOTA KINABALU: The accident in which five people were killed near here on Saturday took a twist with the owner of one of the vehicles involved saying he was not in town at the time of the incident.

He told police he was not the driver of the Mitsubishi Triton pick-up truck as he was away in Kuala Lumpur at that time.

He claimed to know about the incident only after returning here on Sunday, said city police chief Asst Comm Jauteh Dikun.

The police found the Triton at a nearby housing area after the accident.

“We are asking the driver of that vehicle to turn himself – or herself – in to the nearest police station,” said ACP Jauteh.

He added that the police were investigating the incident under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
