New Porsche 911 Carrera in town

SEPANG: Porsche’s latest interpretation of its iconic 911 sports car is here, featuring better handling, power and up to 16% improved fuel efficiency while retaining the unmistakable coupe-ish silhouette.

Available in the 911 Carrera with a 350bhp 3.4-litre engine and the 911 Carrera S with a 400bhp 3.8-litre engine, the latest line-up get 90% new components.

While the roofline has been lowered, the wheelbase is lengthen by 100mm for better cornering stability and more interior space.

The front track has been widen by 46mm for the 911 Carrera and 52mm for the 911 Carrera S to reduce understeer during spirited driving.

Wheels come standard at 20-inch, one size up from the previous generation.

For the Malaysian market, the cars will be equipped with the seven-speed dual clutch Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) transmission which can be set for either smooth or sporty gear shifting feel.

The combination of aluminium and steel construction has resulted in weight savings of 40kg compared with the previous model.

Other new features include electric power steering, auto start/stop, thermal management and electrical recuperation system, extendable rear spoiler and wing mirrors mounted on doors instead of near the base of the A-pillars for better aerodynamics.

Interiorwise, the new model takes styling cues from the Carrera GT where the driver is integrated more closely with the cockpit via the higher centre console and the high-mounted gear lever which is closer to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion.

Other classic and established Porsche touches such as the five-pod instrument panel with the centrally located engine rev counter are maintained.

The 911 Carrera can sprint from 0-100kph in 4.6 seconds to a top speed of 287kph. The more powerful 911 Carrera S does it in 4.3 seconds and has a maximum speed of 302kph.

During the launch at the Sepang International Circuit on Friday, 50 lucky guests were given a “taxi ride” in latest model driven by professional racers.
The 911 Carrera and the 911 Carrera S are RM750,000 and RM850,000 (OTR without insurance) respectively.

The cars are offered with a four-year free maintenance and warranty.
