Hybrid joins revised BMW 7 Series line-up

KUALA LUMPUR: A hybrid is among three variants that have joined the new BMW 7 Series line-up in Malaysia, promising even better comfort and luxury than before.

The BMW ActiveHybrid 7L is the third BMW hybrid to be introduced following the local availability of the 3 and 5 Series hybrids last year.

The ActiveHybrid 7L represents the 7 Series flagship and combines the latest hybrid technology with intelligent energy management systems, enabling significant all-electric operations and reducing fuel consumption by up to 27%.

The ActiveHybrid 7L is the flagship of the 7 Series.

It comes standard with the M Sport package comprising the M Aerodynamics exterior package, M Sport leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, and M light alloy wheels. In addition, the flagship model is also fitted with the high-end Bang & Olufsen system with 16 speakers.

Other 7 Series variants announced today were the 730Li and 740Li.

In general, the highlights of the latest 7 Series are its upgraded interior with optimised soundproofing, improved ride comfort and new adaptive LED headlights as well as advanced safety technology. Enhancing the ride comfort is the use of air suspension at the rear axle.

Apart from full LED for headlights, a distinctive kidney grille with nine slats on each side, redesigned bumper apron, and indicators integrated into the exterior mirror casings lend the BMW a rejuvenated face.

At the back, a chrome trim strip between the taillights in the rear apron provides additional contrast.

Seats are revised and made more ergonomic. The freestanding 9.2 inch flat screens for the rear seats provide a pleasant diversion on long road trips.

Powering the 7 Series is a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In the hybrid, an electric motor delivers an additional output of 55hp, for a total combined output of 354hp/500Nm, compared with 320hp/450Nm in the 740Li and 258hp/310Nm in the 730Li.

The hybrid-specific Auto Start/Stop function is activated when the vehicle is approaching a stop. Depending on the charge in the battery or its acceleration requirement, the engine will restart immediately after a stop or once the vehicle reaches 60kph.

The fuel-saving ECO PRO mode has been enhanced with anticipation assistant. This feature uses data from the navigation system to recognise bends, T-junctions, boundaries and roundabouts to provide drivers with tips on reducing accelerator pressure in advance.

For further efficiency, the extended ECO PRO functionality includes the new coasting mode, designed to decouple the combustion engine when it is overrunning at speeds between 50 and 160kph.

To avoid blinding other drivers, the 7 Series is fitted with a night vision system that controls the swivel of the LED headlights.

As part of active safety, the 7 Series can monitor the driver through his or her driving behaviour and even suggests that drivers take a break when unsafe levels of fatigue are detected.

BMW Group Malaysia CEO Dr Gerhard Pils said "the introduction of the new BMW 7 Series is a testament to our belief that sustainability is the future of the automotive industry."

“While dynamic performance continues to be an outstanding quality of the new 7 Series, sophisticated chassis technology is incorporated to ensure refined delivery of power from the drive system via a pneumatic rear suspension,” he said.

The launch today coincided with the 10th anniversary of BMW Group Malaysia's operations and was held in conjunction with the BMW Malaysian Open tennis tournament at the Royal Selangor Golf Club here.

Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki joined Dr Pils in unveiling the 7 Series.

The updated fifth-generation model will be available at BMW dealerships nationwide from March 30.

The retail prices (on the road, without insurance, with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive) for the 730Li, 740Li and ActiveHybrid 7L are RM648,800, RM818,800 and RM938,800 respectively.
