Uneven braking may be cause

Q1: The engine and body of my 2003 Toyota Unser vibrates when the car is slowing down before stopping. The car is perfectly okay and will not shake when driven normally. How can it be repaired?

Dr Mohamad Daud
Shah Alam

There are a number of reasons why the body vibrates, particularly in the drivetrain system.

One of the possibilities is the engine mounting. The function of engine mounting is to absorb vibration generated by the engine during operation. As the rubber / insulator mounting hardware couldn’t absorb the vibration, the engine vibration can then be felt in the driver compartment. Maybe it is time to change all of your engine mounting.

Another possibility that causes body vibration to occur is the effect of uneven braking of the four wheels. Ask your workshop to check the brake system thoroughly.

Q2:  I drive a 2009 Persona SE AT.  For the two months, the car will jerk only when I shift from parking into reverse gear. However, this won’t happen if I shift from neutral or drive into reverse gear.

The dashboard indicator would also be stuck at “R” when I shift into parking gear. However, if I restart the engine, the indicator would return to “P”.  I had it checked at one of the Proton Edar service dealerships. They couldn't help me and referred me to Proton.

What's wrong?

If the engine jerks when you shift from “P” to reverse gear, this may be due to the lack of gear oil or mechanical damage in the gearbox. It may also be caused by damage to the automatic transaxle ECU.

As to the dashboard problem, the wiring system, the indicator or inhibitor switch may have been affected or the automatic transaxle ECU may be damaged..

A proton scanner (PADT) is the best means to diagnose the cause of your car’s trouble.

Q3: My Peugeot 206 has a central locking issue. It wont lock remotely or with the key on the driver, or with the key on the passenger doors. I've checked all the fuses but nothing works.

You might be having a problem with the central lock motors, electrical relay and also the switches. Remember that the central lock unit controls the locking mechanism on all doors including the back door.

Have you check the remote control switch? Try to re-calibrate the remote switch and this may solve your problem. For further checking, run the diagnosis with the Peugeot planet scanner tools.
